What does success look like to you? In its simplest form, success is achieving a goal you set out to accomplish. So successful people achieve every goal in life, right?
There is no such thing as a successful person. Well, not in the modern definition. Success is fleeting. Success looks different for every person.
So what exactly is success?
Success on the Horizon
I like to think of success as a horizon, something you can see, but as you travel towards it, you never quite reach it. The horizon is not a finish line for a race. There will always be more horizon stretched out in front of you, out of reach.
As we journey through life, we will end up at the point that was once the horizon. But up close, it will seem completely different than what we expected. And stretched out in front of us, yet again, is another horizon. We will never be completely satisfied.
The real sin is failing to realize the path before us. If we tread upon the path of life in hopes of reaching the horizon, but ignore the adventure along the way, we’ll lose ourselves.
The Unique Millennial Outlook of Success
As I talk with more and more millennials, I’ve discovered a new approach to viewing success. The millennial mindset is not focused on collecting riches or fame, but rather achieving significance and meaning.
This is powerful shift of mentality, and as the last of our generation begins to enter the workforce, I’m left wondering what impact this will have. What happens when an entire generation stops climbing the corporate ladder to pursue their dreams?
Take, for example, Anu and Suyog who left good paying full-time jobs to start Driftaway Coffee Company. They struck the right balance of following their dreams and remaining bread winners. Imagine if more millennials followed their lead.
What path will you take?
I know I’m optimistic, but there is a possibility for all of us to find significance and meaning. The horizon of success will always be there, but what matters most is the path you choose to follow. How will you know you are on the right path? You won’t. Let’s be clear: there isn’t a map to help guide you.
But if you love what you are doing and hustle, I guarantee you will stumble across the right path.
Action Item: List three people in your life who you think are “successful.” Reach out to them and ask them about their journey. You will find more similarities to your journey than you’d expect.
