I signed up for Birchbox last October, so I’ve been receiving boxes for a while now. Although I’ve had one or two disappointing boxes where I don’t like most of the samples, the overall experience is really great and I’ve found some products that I really love.
For those of you who don’t know how Birchbox works, here’s the DL – $10 per month gets you a box with 4-6 samples of high-end beauty products. You can review the samples you receive for points in their shop and then use accumulated points to get a discount on orders. So in reality, the real cost of the box is less if you plan on buying full-size products from their store. Points accumulate fast and there is always some promo and/or coupon code you can use to get some great deals!
You take a mini quiz when you sign up so they know your preferences, like if you wear perfume, dye your hair, your skin type and color, etc. I’ve received makeup (lip gloss, mascara, eyeliner, etc.), hair care products (sea salt spray, shampoo, dry shampoo, etc.), skin care products (face cleanser, shaving cream, lotion, etc.) and other fun lifestyle samples (hair ties, snacks, tea, etc.). Some of my favorite products that I’ve actually purchased the full-size of are the Eyeko Black Magic Mascara and the Liz Earle Cleanse & PolishTM Hot Cloth Cleanser.
Every month is themed (this month is travel!) and it’s fun to see how all the products tie into each theme.

This is what I got in my June box! The price indicates the price of the sample: the full-size price divided by the size of the sample. For example, if the full-priced product costs $30 and the sample is 1/5 of the size of the full product, then the sample is $6.
Benefit They’re Real! Mascara ($8.12)
I really wanted to love this mascara. I’ve read great reviews about it on Birchbox and Sephora. But, it wasn’t as life-changing as I had expected it to be. Maybe my expectations were too high? It was a little clumpy right out of the tube and it smudged to below my eyes after a few hours of wear. Not the worst mascara I’ve ever used, but definitely not worth the hype for me. I’m going to continue to use it (I would never waste a good-sized sample!), but it takes a back seat to my favorite mascara – Eyeko’s Black Magic. I’ll let you be the judge- try it out and let me know how it works for you!
Perlier Body Cream ($4.25)
This shea almond cream is divine! I have dry skin and this has been awesome on my legs, especially after shaving. I also typically like unscented body lotions and creams, but this has a nice, light scent that isn’t overpowering and doesn’t compete with other scents I might be wearing. The natural formula is from a renowned Italian skincare brand and is great at moisturizing dry skin. It does take a little bit of time to soak in, so I recommend using it either before bed or right after a shower for maximum results.
These three products work to retain color and moisture for color-treated hair. You’re supposed to apply the primer into dry hair before showering to seal the shaft of the hair and prevent water from penetrating and fading color. …I just don’t understand how my hair could be cleaned after using a product like this! I did try it (twice) and I felt that both times my hair didn’t get as clean as it should have. Maybe it works better during the winter or for people with dry hair. Unfortunately, the shampoo and conditioner samples were both very small and difficult to get all the product out, so I can’t really attest to how they work. I even had to add a little of my own shampoo to my hair to wash it all. Overall, a little disappointed that I didn’t get to really try all the samples, but everything did smell really nice!
I already mentioned this cleanser from Birchbox because it has been one of my greatest finds. The sample I received in my box has lasted me a week and a half so far (and I still have some left!). I even just ordered a full size product because I love it that much. The cleanser is a little different because you apply to onto a dry face, then wet the included muslin cloth with warm water and gently sweep over your skin to remove the cleanser and everything it picked up. It exfoliates, moisturizes, and removes all makeup, oil, and grime- even waterproof mascara! I have dry, sensitive skin and usually only use Dove sensitive skin bar soap to wash my body and my face. I occasionally get a blemish or two here and there and I’m terrible at not picking them. But! This cleanser system has made a difference (yes, in just a week) to my complexion and I love that it’s natural and gentle enough to use on my skin. The cleanser uses eucalyptus oil, rosemary, and cocoa butter and has a calm cooling effect when applying. I seriously can’t stress enough how much you should try this. Yes, you!
Now, I don’t wear perfume often and I actually have my Birchbox preference to send me the least amount of fragrance samples. After saying that, I actually really love this floral perfume! I didn’t expect to but it’s light, breezy, and definitely not old lady-smelling. The most surprising thing is that the scent is truly long-lasting like it claims to be and lasts throughout the day. I found myself sneaking sniffs of my wrists while at work because I love the smell and was curious to see how well it would last during my constant glove-wearing and hand-washing day (I work in a pharmacy). This might have turned me into a perfume-wearing convert. Only time will tell!
Overall, I highly recommend signing up for Birchbox (click me!) if you like makeup, skincare, and beauty products or if you just like getting a little surprise every month! I received $24.59 in products for only $10 and, after reviewing, got 70 points in the Birchbox shop (100 points gets $10 off a purchase) which is pretty much like an additional $7! I will continue to post reviews of my boxes every month so you can see what other great products you can try out!
